The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
